Working General Foreman

The Working General Foreman is responsible for managing construction work on-site, including contract administration, quality control, planning, and accident prevention. He/She is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the progress of the project and ensuring the project is completed safely, on time, within budget, according to quality standards and other contractual obligations.

Job Duties

  • Implements the HSE program on-site and ensures employees and sub-contractors are adhering to the company and customer’s safety plans and safety legislations
  • Promotes job site safety and, encourages safe work practices
  • Conducts daily tool box and weekly safety meetings
  • Conducts job hazard assessments, prepares safe work practices and daily work permits as outlined in the project safety plan
  • Conducts risk assessments with sub-contractors and ensures control measures are implemented as outlined in the safety plan
  • Conducts incident investigations following company and customer legislated procedures to ensure accurate and timely reporting, and implementing follow-up actions
  • Plans and coordinates installation, and maintains temporary site installations, equipment and services required to manage a safe and productive work site
  • Monitors construction progress to schedule and effectively adjust the project to evolving job conditions
  • Manages construction work packages and the associated sub-contractors
  • Communicates the objectives of quality, time cost and other project instructions to construction team and sub-contractors to ensure compliance with these objectives
  • Conducts sub-contractor audits
  • Ensures quality control procedures are implemented by work crews and sub-contractors
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as outlined in the construction execution plan
  • Prepares and reports daily progress reports in accordance with the construction plan
  • Performs inspections and close-out walk-through
  • Establishes and maintains proper communications and relations with the customer’s site personnel
  • Mentors and trains employees, and conducts worker competency evaluations
  • Maintains positive relationships with customers, suppliers, sub-contractors and other employees.
  • Participates as an integral member of the team and contributes towards the success of the Company by performing other related duties as required

Working Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Project Manager
  • Individuals reporting to him/her are:
    • Site construction crew
    • Project specific Sub Contractors
  • Interfaces directly with other Project team members including:
    • Project Manager
    • Project Safety Advisor
    • Project procurement and contract administration
    • Engineering and Design personnel assigned to the project
    • Other construction personnel within the organization
  • Key customer contact is usually the customer’s Construction Manager or Superintendent


  • 8 – 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the construction industry, of which 3+ years must be in Site Supervision and crew supervision
  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (trades, engineering technology, construction management, etc.) will be an asset
  • Technical competence with an in depth knowledge of design and construction processes and terms
  • Experience preparing and managing construction documents
  • Leadership skills
  • Organizational skills - a systematic approach to tasks to achieve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal with an ability to manage diverse personalities
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal and listening)
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Steel-framed, fabric-covered buildings installation experience is an asset.
  • Valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driver’s abstract
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Additional certifications (CSTS, LSE, First Aid, equipment operations, etc.)will be an asset

Work Conditions

  • This is a primarily a job-site based position ranging from relatively short (3-5 days) to extended durations of up to a year in length.
  • Work hours will be based on customer site requirements with most sites operating 10 to 12 hour days, 7 days per week
  • Must be able to travel and be on site for extended periods (up to 3 weeks at a time)
